Working with a costumed model, April Connors demonstrates how to use traditional media to experiment with the concepts of characterization, storytelling, tone and mood. April begins with short poses that focus on warming up the arm and mind, feeling her way through gestures and actions with media suited for speed. She then moves on to longer poses where ideas can be developed, consciously choosing media that reflect the goal for each pose, whether it is a five-minute story scenario in marker, a bright and colorful character expression study, or a moody and brooding black and white charcoal sketch. The demonstration prioritizes the influence of story on character design using body language, expression, mood and costume. April explores various media such as permanent media, pastel, dry and wet mixed media, texture, brush pen, charcoal and water color. For those interested in developing their skills with characterization in the context of a narrative illustration, this title offers a variety of inspired and masterfully executed techniques, thought processes and workflow.

01IntroductionFree

In this lesson, April explains how traditional figure drawing with costume models serves as a comprehensive training method for multiple aspects of visual storytelling and character development. She emphasizes that working from observation naturally integrates skills like acting, mood, lighting, and character design into the drawing process. The structured approach of progressing from quick gesture drawings to longer poses allows artists to build a deep understanding of their subject, ultimately enabling them to create compelling illustrations that capture not just physical likeness but also the story and personality of the character.

Introduction
02Warming up / gestureFree

This lesson highlights the value of gesture drawing as both a warm-up exercise and a method for character exploration. April's emphasis on process over perfection, combined with strategic tool choices and progressive timing, creates an environment where creative accidents add to the result. This approach transforms quick sketching from mere practice into a collaborative storytelling process that builds both technical skills and a valuable reference library for future creative work.

03Story-scenario sketch

This lesson demonstrates that effective artistic practice prioritizes creative problem-solving and storytelling over technical perfection. By embracing spontaneity and challenge, artists can develop their skills more effectively while exploring character development and narrative possibilities. The collaborative and improvisational nature of this approach makes it both educational and enjoyable, emphasizing that the journey of creation is often more valuable than the final result.

04Exploring character through shape

This 10-minute character study demonstrates how strategic prioritization and shape-focused thinking can create compelling character designs within tight time constraints. The key is establishing a clear visual "thesis statement" and ensuring every mark supports that central idea, while using techniques like visual irony and whole-body acting to inject personality and humor. Rather than getting caught up in rendering details, the focus remains on visual clarity and storytelling potential that can be further developed in future iterations.

05Exploring a character's expression and body language

The lesson emphasizes that artistic expression transcends tools and materials; what truly matters is the artist's vision and ability to communicate that truly matter. The instructor advocates for embracing spontaneity, working with limitations, and focusing on storytelling over technical perfection. This approach encourages artists to be resourceful, authentic, and confident in their ability to create meaningful work, regardless of circumstances.

06Acting and spontaneity with dry and wet mixed media

This lesson emphasizes that gesture drawing is about capturing energy, character, and movement rather than achieving technical perfection. April advocates for experimentation, having fun with the process, and not letting anxiety about imperfect draftsmanship hinder creativity. The key message is that artistic improvement comes through consistent practice and mileage, so artists should focus on doing the work and enjoying the creative process rather than worrying about immediate results.

07Acting and spontaneity with dry and wet mixed media, part 2.

The main takeaway in this lesson is that successful gesture drawing is about capturing and preserving initial energy rather than achieving photorealistic rendering. April focuses on working intuitively with mixed media, allowing each tool to contribute its unique qualities while maintaining the spontaneous, explosive character established in the opening moments. This approach prioritizes artistic impact and personal expression over technical perfection, resulting in drawings that feel alive and dynamic.

08Quick gestures, prioritizing ideas and movement

This lesson emphasizes that effective character development begins with understanding how different characters move and carry themselves. April's warm-up process isn't about creating polished artwork, but rather about exploring the unique energy and movement vocabulary that defines each character. By focusing on the thinking process behind quick gesture studies, artists can build a solid foundation for more developed work in longer pose sessions.

09Communicating simple ideas that convey mood

10Fluidity: Thematically combining media to content

This lesson emphasizes that effective figure drawing is about matching your medium and approach to your artistic intent. By using brush-pen and ink-wash techniques, April creates a delicate, flowing quality that reinforces the feminine character of the subject. The key lesson is that an artist's choice of materials and techniques should support the mood and story they're trying to tell, not just serve as tools to record what is being seen.

11Using media and texture to reflect a theme

This lesson illustrates how technical limitations and material choices can enhance creative expression rather than hinder it. April shows how embracing imperfection, letting the medium guide the process, and maintaining a sense of adventure in drawing, leads to more authentic and engaging artwork. The key message is that artistic development is a lifelong journey of exploration, and every drawing session offers opportunities for discovery and growth.

12Tone, mood, texture and characterization

This lesson demonstrates that figure drawing is about much more than technical accuracy — it's also about capturing the essence and personality of the subject through creative collaboration and bold artistic choices. April shows how mixing media spontaneously, and working with skilled models, can push artists beyond their comfort zones to create more expressive, atmospheric work. The key message is that observational drawing should focus on understanding and interpreting character rather than simply reproducing visual information.

13Materials Overview

While April presents an extensive collection of art supplies, her underlying message emphasizes thoughtful preparation and versatility over complexity. The key takeaway is that, being prepared with diverse materials, allows artists to respond spontaneously to creative opportunities. That said, even the simplest tools, like ballpoint pens, can be incredibly effective. April's approach demonstrates that successful art-making comes from understanding materials and having options available, rather than relying on expensive or exotic supplies.

To wrap up this workshop, April emphasizes accessibility and perseverance in art. Her main message is encouraging and democratizing — that drawing is a skill that can be practiced anywhere, with any tools, and that learning opportunities are abundant if artists maintain an open mindset and don't let limitations stop their creative practice.
